Name, nationality, town/country

Anugrah Wayan – CMPT RULES, born and raised in Bali, Indonesia.

What is the process that drives you to be the artist you are today?

I was born in Batuan village – Bali, where this village is known as the home of all kinds of art- from dance & traditional painting to sculpture & carving. I know art from my family – my uncle is a ceramic painter and my father is a wood carver.

I majored in multimedia at a vocational high school and became really interested in graphic design. After graduating in 2015, I worked at a printing company in Bali as a graphic designer, and it was in 2018 that I decided to resign to become a freelancer as a Illustrator.

3 adjectives that define you the best?

Me? flexible, authentic and persistent. my work: Bold, Vintage, Hand-drawn

What are your influences? your work inspiration?

I was hugely inspired by my uncle who was a ceramic painter, I really like the raw technique and colour palette he uses. I also get a lot of inspiration from vintage ‘70s designs, as well as vintage ephemera and matchbox labels. Other artists and illustrators that inspire me are Young Jerks, Alana Louise, Toyo Kiki, Neighborhood studio.

Your working technique(s) (pen, stencil, paint, ink, digital…)?

My basic working techniques start from hand-drawn, drawing pen, sharpie, Chinese ink. As time progressed, I switched to digital (pen-tablet) because it was practical & flexible. Sometimes when I’m bored, I also do paintings on canvas with acrylic ink.

With which artist are you dreaming (dreamed) to work (even dead artist)?

I don’t know, there are many artists that I appreciate. But what comes to my mind right now is that I want to collaborate with my uncle (ceramic painter).

If you have to choose one book or magazine?

I have lots of art catalog books & Hawaiian shirt catalogs, and animals that were given to me by my uncle. I don’t have a specific book to choose, but I want to collect more books of labels, graphics and fonts.

Is music important for you, especially in your work process? what are you listening now?

Of course, music can keep my mood up!

Recently I have been enjoying listening to The Story So Far, No Pressure, Sunami, Seringai, Jangar, Barasuara and classic instruments.

The website you’re visiting every day?

Lately, I often visit artist/illustrator website and font maker websites.

If you have to leave for one month in a desert place, what are the 3 « things » you will bring with you?

Of course my GF, ipad and laptop!

A funny story to tell ?

When I was in elementary school I always said I would choose a painting school when I grew up. But I turned around because during registration I chose to move to a multimedia school and that led me to become an illustrator.
